Dr. Rajaram Bhalerao

Dr. Rajaram Amrut Bhalerao completed MS (General Surgery) at Seth G. S. Medical College and KEM Hospital. He was awarded Distinction and Gold Medal in Anatomy as well as Surgery by University of Bombay in 1952 & 1956 respectively. He studied in Great Britain on a Commonwealth Fellowship and was awarded FRCS from Edinburgh in October 1963.
He worked at KEM Hospital, Mumbai as Professor of Surgery and later, Head of the Department. He joined Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai in 1985 as Chief of Surgery and specialist in Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases. Later, he was the Director of Professional Services till 2001. Presently, he is the Advisor to Trustees on Strategy and Medical Planning at Hinduja Hospitals, Mumbai.
His main areas of interest have been surgery of Liver -Trauma Resections, Portal Hypertension venous shunts and esophageal replacement. He has more than 60 publications in national and international journals to his credit. He is considered as an authority in ‘Wound Infection & Sterilization of Operation Theatres’.
He was was awarded Dr. R K Menda Oration in 1983. He has been a proud recipient of the prestigious Dr B C Roy Award for the year 2001. Dr. Bhalerao has been associated with Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh, a cultural institute founded in 1935 as an active member of the working committee and was its Chief Secretary for many years. In the early 1930s, Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh was responsible for reviving the Marathi Natya Sangeet Theatre form. Today, under Dr. Bhalerao’s guidance, the institute does social work in cultural sphere for the uplifting of Marathi Language and Theater. In recognition of his work, Dr Bhalerao was honored as President of All India Marathi Natya Sammelan, a National literary Conference of Marathi playwrights, actors and theater professionals.
